Small (<80 mm) semi aquatic salamanders with aquatic larvae, occurring in extreme western North America. They may represent remnants of an early radiation of salamanders. Members are small and stocky bodied, with large eyes and a semi-aquatic lifestyle and vestigial lungs. Fertilization is internal, and large, unpigmented eggs are laid beneath rocks or in crevices of cold clear water. There are 4 species in this genus. Some morphological characters for this family are: 1) squared glands posterior to vent; 2) bright yellow/yellow-green venter.
